'She had learnt to wait for the changes and the help that life brings. Life is like the sea, sometimes you are in the trough of the wave, sometimes on the crest, and always, trough or crest a mysterious tide bears you forward to an unseen, but certain shore.' Dorothy Whipple

A lovely lovely quote. There is something both scary and peaceful about that tide: for once, there is something so completely out of your hands, all you can do is float along with it.
ReplyDeleteTonia - I think this may be one of my very favourite quotes. Yes scary & peaceful.
DeleteA lovely evocative quote. I think sometimes I feel I've gone in too deep and am dangerously out of my depth, and often I end up completely washed up on the shore, but on the shore nonetheless..... to continue the analogy!! xCathy
ReplyDeleteCathy - Yes on the shore nonetheless, & thankful for dry land.
DeleteStunning...Dorothy was so WISE I think. I am struck by that afresh every time I read her books.
ReplyDeleteRachel - Yes wise is the right word. Now wondering which of her books to read next.
DeleteNever a truer word spoken...
ReplyDeleteWilloughby - Thank goodness for the wisdom from good books.
DeleteIt's comforting to realize the shore IS certain.
ReplyDeleteAnbolyn - Yes one just needs to remember it is certain when in the midst of a wave.
DeleteMy favorite line of the book...
ReplyDeleteJoAnn - I can imagine spending most of a re read of this book waiting for this passage.
