two boxes of fancy notepaper

We started some of our Christmas shopping this weekend and had our traditional Christmas shopping lunch of a Pret turkey sandwich.

'Either side of the crowded dirty street the lights were coming out in the shop windows. Snow fingered their faces like cold feathers. They went gay. They bought red, green, yellow, and solferino candles in a box for a shilling at an ironmongers, they bought red and gold cake frill for sixpence at a cash drug stores, and two boxes of fancy notepaper and two pairs of gloves at a drapers. They bought oranges, and chocolate mice, and soap babies, and penny whistles for the stockings...' Elizabeth Cambridge Hostages to Fortune

Are you an organised buy gifts in advance person or do you like to save it for nearer the time?

  1. The Pret Christmas sandwich really is a thing of wonder- it's never dry. some serious sandwich science went in to that one.

  2. I am a 'buy lots in advance, then panic at the last minute about the few' person. I'm a veggie (but eat fish) wonder if Pret cater for that?!

  3. Lilac - I'm getting better at buying in advance, but tend to then panic buy more gifts for Warmth at the last minute.

  4. We just got a Pret here in Boston and it's bringing back such fond memories of being in London! Their sandwiches are elegant, somehow. :) Now all we need is to get our Waterstone's back. (We had one of those, too, many years ago.) And maybe the first U.S. branch of Persephone Books. ...

    1. Audrey - Oh yes a first branch of Persephone - or if you had a Waterstone's they may then sell Persephones for you. Some of the large ones do over here.
