scurry along

Having had a glorious rest I'm now back into the commuting. My journey is fine, even better if it could be a little shorter. It's open air, no tunnels, apart from when we go under the Thames at Greenwich, and I tend to get a seat.

'Miss Catherine Birch trotted through the lobby of the ministry where she was employed, automatically waved her pass at the doorman, and joined the hurrying throng of men and women pouring down the London street towards the bus stops and tube stations. Their haste was contagious. she began to scurry along as though a vitally important evening lay before her.' How do you travel home from work?

  1. Setting alarms and then straight into the car. Music on (or Radio 4 as long as the presenter isn't too fatuous or shouty). Only a 20 minute drive but it always has a feel of urgency about it, as though the world won't stop chasing until I can close the front door behind me.
    Haste is contagious!

  2. Your photo and quote reminded me of that scene in the film "Howards End" where everyone is under an umbrella rushing home after the Beethoven concert. You always find the best quotes!

  3. I pick up my cup of tea and walk up the stairs - to the home office. However come Christmas time my commute will become longer, we are building an office at the end of the garden. I will need warm boots - and probably an umbrella.

  4. Lilac - I'm not sure how productive I'd be if I worked from home, though I like the idea of walking to the end of the garden.
