And meanwhile

One of the lovely books I read this summer was A Favourite of the Gods by Sybille Bedford re published by Daunt Books.

'Anyhow who is this ideal husband of yours? Where is he?'
'He isn't an ideal husband, he is just a man I should be proud to marry.'
'Have you met him?'
'No. Not even in fiction. I have no idea what he'll be like. But I shall know when we meet.'
'That sounds like love.'
'So much is,' said Constanza.
'And meanwhile, darling, you had better take me.'
'Meanwhile,' she said, 'is for people who do not know when to wait.'

  1. Now there's a question for a Friday! Certainly not a Darcy, Rochester or Copperfield. Hmm. Maybe only Henry from The Time Traveller's Wife - mainly for his job and book collection - but that pesky habit of nipping back and forth through time would be annoying after a while.
Oooh I shall be mulling this one over all weekend!

    1. Tonia - If you could plan just brief popping back to the past then it could be okay? Am also not a Darcy or Rochester woman. Hope you had a good weekend.

  2. Well - it would have to be someone with a huge house in the country, and whilst Pemberley would do, I think I should prefer Manderley as it is by the sea and so Maxim de Winter has my vote! Great question! xCathy

    1. Cathy - Well yes if it's fiction we can also daydream about the house too.

  3. Great question! Tricky though... I think maybe Henry Tilney from Northanger Abbey, nice house and he is my favourite Austen hero. I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head... What's your answer?

    1. Helen - It's funny how Austen's men keep being mentioned. As a teenager it would have been Freddie in Room with a View, now maybe George. How lovely to have Florence as one's special place.

  4. What about Mr. Knightley in Emma? He is dashing, sociable, and has a good heart. Maybe a bit of a lecturer, but still he does it for the right reasons. And of course there is Donwell Abbey to take into consideration.

    1. Sunday - How interesting another Austen choice. I think I'd prefer Donwell Abbey to Pemberley.
