teasing complexity

Whilst on holiday I finally shared this blog with mother, Hello! Whilst chatting on the 'phone mums mentioned how much she was enjoying Rose Tremain's Music and Silence. I knew there were a couple of quotes not yet used from this book, stored in my old quote books. So as a way of welcoming a new reader and of putting the old quotes previously stored on paper.

"As they part, both men reflect upon all that might have been said... and yet was not said; and this knowledge of what so often exists in the silences between words both haunts them and makes them marvel at the teasing complexity of all human discourse." Rose Tremain Music & Silence

  1. It's funny how peoples personality comes though in their blogs. You don't need a photograph and a biography, it just comes through in the writing and what the blogger choses to write about. Only 2 friends know about my blog, I haven't shared it with family, I'm quite private, and it is one way for me to share my photos and my 'enthusiasms'. I haven't read any Rose Tremain, I have added her to my tbr pile. I loved Balzac and The Little Chinese Seamstress.

  2. I didn't tell my family about my blog for the first couple of years, even though a link to it was on my facebook page, none of them thought to go have a look at it. Only recently has my sister been reading the occasional post. Happily, she likes!

    1. Tonia - I mentioned it to a few friends but, apart from one none read it, partly as they don't know what it's called. Have yet to share it with my sister, somehow it just doesn't come up in an appropriate way in conversation to mention it.

  3. Love that quote! There is so much truth in it. Rose Tremain has real insight into human behavior.

    1. Sunday - Rose Tremain is one of my favourite female authors, & it possibly is because of how well she observes, & comments on, human behaviour.

  4. My family knows about my blog, but I'm pretty sure they don't read it!
Do you still keep quote books?
I've read 'Restoration', which is a remarkable book, and would love to read more Rose Tremain. She's a wonderful writer.

    1. Anbolyn - My quote books have sort of become blog note books now where I store quotes. If I read a heart stopping passage they do get added to the original quote books. It is however much easier trying to find them on the blog than trying to remember quite when I read it & finding the right book. This makes me want to go back through my quote books.
