'The windows of the drawing-room opened on to a balcony overlooking the garden. At the far end, against the wall, there was a tall, slender pear tree in fullest, richest bloom; it stood perfect, as though becalmed against the jade-green sky... Down below in the garden beds, the red and yellow tulips, heavy with flowers, seemed to lean upon the dusk." Katherine Mansfield Bliss in Something childish and very natural

Hoping for glorious spring evenings enjoying dusk in our garden.
I keep pottering around my own garden at dusk recently: something about the colours and the birdsong stops me from going in. Hope you get some time to 'lean upon the dusk' too!
ReplyDeleteI leant upon the dusk yesterday with a slice of banana bread and my coat still on. Hope you enjoy your garden this week too.
Deletepottering in my garden; early mornings whilst in my dressing gown, dead heading and noticing, and early evenings doing a little inspection of what has appeared during the day, new leaves, new nests and a gazzilion shades of green. The Katherine Mansfield quote is quite lovely.
ReplyDeleteLilac - There is something so satisfying about dead heading. I keep popping out in the evenings to see if my tulips have opened. Hope you saw new shades of green this evening.
DeleteOh, I love that quote. She really was an incredible writer, so talented and we can only imagine how much she would have written had she lived longer. Thanks for posting this lovely quote.
ReplyDeleteSunday - I'd really like to read more of her stories. Something else to add to my to be read this year. So pleased you like the quote.
