The June Roses

We've come back from holiday to find the roses resplendent, not just in our garden but in neighbours as we along the pavements.

"The June roses over the porch were awake bright and early on that morning, rejoicing with all their hearts in the cloudless sunshine, and like friendly little neighbours, as they were. Quite flushed with excitement were their ruddy faces as they swung in the wind, whispering to one another what they had seen; for some peeped in at the dining-room windows, where the feast was spread, some climbed up to nod and smile at the sisters, as they dressed the bride, others waved a welcome to those who came and went on various errands in garden, porch and hall, and all, from the rosiest full-blown flower to the palest baby-bud, offered their tribute of beauty and fragrance to the gentle mistress who had loved and tended them so long." 1. Lovely! Wondering whose garden is it though? Aunt March's? Marmee's?

  2. Beautiful description! I never would have thought of roses as 'rejoicing with all their hearts'. My parents had a yellow rose bush when I was growing up and I still love yellow roses to this day.

    1. Anbolyn - I live how childhood memories stay with us in adult life. Yes 'rejoicing with all their hesrts' is a wonderful phrase.

  3. Wonderful quote - my roses are lovely at the moment. My favourite one - Alchemist - is all shades of pink and yellow intermingled, which could only look OK on a rose! Love the quote in the last post too, though haven't felt that way for a while! xCathy

  4. I love that quote from Louisa May Alcott. I have also enjoyed coming home from a trip to see the roses or hydrangeas blooming. It's such a welcoming sight!

    1. Sunday - Yes returning to see which flowers have blossomed is like meeting up with dear friends. Our hydrangea is slowly waking up.
