'There was not a breath of wind, and under the glowing white sky tinged with pink from the horizon which seemed to fume with the warning of frost, the scant leaves were hanging motionless from the lime trees. The waiters who had to serve the tables outside the cafe were wearing their overcoats over their long aprons. It was the first sting of autumn.' penelope fitzgerald the beginning of spring
Somehow 'the first sting of autumn' makes it seem horrible when in fact it's sometimes more like the 'first glory of autumn.'
Nothing as sharp as a sting here for us today, just grey and soggy. But yesterday was beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHelen - We to have had grey and soggy but today has been crisp and sunny.
DeleteI love that first sting of autumn: the sky here is a glorious blue today but the air still has a nip of it.
ReplyDeleteTonia - Hope you've had glorious blue skies this weekend as well.
DeleteIt always comes as a surprise that first stinging cold, which is odd really since it rolls round every year. What a lovely quote. And jacket for that matter. x
ReplyDeleteBelinda - Glad you like the quote. I quite like the scarves.
DeleteToday was bright and sunny, but when we only returned from warmer climes a week ago, it still does have a bit of a sting to it! Think I'm suffering from thermal shock. Lovely quote. xCathy
ReplyDeleteCathy - Funny how our bodies get so used to their new climates no matter how temporary we stay in them.
DeleteSometimes I'm jealous that I don't know what the sting of autumn or the glory of autumn really means! We don't have seasons here except for hot and not hot :)
ReplyDeleteAnbolyn - I'm intrigued where about in America you live? Are you entering your not hot season now?
Deleteit is a shock isn't it? I love your picture and a great quote
ReplyDeleteJustine - Thank you. Hope you're settling into autumn now.
