old-fashioned flowers

'He strayed down a walk edged with box, with apple-trees, pear-trees, and cherry-trees on one side, and a border on the other full of all sorts of old-fashioned flowers, stocks, sweet-williams, primroses, pansies mingled with southernwood, sweet-briar, and various fragrant herbs. They were fresh now as a succession of April showers and gleams, followed by a lovely spring morning, could make them: the sun was just entering the dappled east, and his light illuminated the wreathed and dewy orchard-trees and shone down the quiet walks under them.' Charlotte Bronte Jane Eyre

  1. Perfect to read after the April shower that's made everything glisten here.

    1. Tonia - We had full on hail stones in East London, thankfully it was short lived. Hope you have a good weekend.

  2. It sounds like paradise! One of the things I don't like about living in the desert is the lack of flower gardens - it is so hot and dry that flowers don't do very well here unless they are desert flowers that only bloom when we've had lots of rain.

    1. Anbolyn - I was outside in the garden yesterday & thought how wonderful an English garden is on a sunny spring day. It could be paradise.

  3. I spent all of yesterday in the garden too, how lovely it was to get some rays of sunshine and just potter about reacquainting myself with the plants and birds. There was a lovely film on Countryfile last night about the Brontes parsonage.

  4. What a lovely passage from Jane Eyre and not at all what I would bring to mind when I think about the book.
AT LAST my spring garden is starting to look as it should, with a smother of primroses and forget-me-nots and clumps of daffodils.

    1. Share - Yes one does think of Jane Eyre as bleak and unspring like. Hope you've been able to enjoy your garden this week.
